Travel Philosophy

The Vernon Girls Travel Softball (VGSL) program allows all participating players to compete at an advanced level against players from other towns. The number of teams and player positions to be offered will be based on age group, skill level of players interested, the availability of coaching and other volunteers, as well as other factors as determined by the Board of Directors. The use of competitive tryouts will be employed by the VGSL but shall not be the only factor in determining whether a player will be offered a roster position on a travel team. Due to the limited travel programs in the Sussex County area, the VGSL allows players not from Vernon to try out for our travel teams, and compete for roster spots, in the interest to keep in line with our Travel Program Philosophy.
VERNON TRAVEL SOFTBALL PHILOSOPHY
The Vernon Travel Softball league is committed to improving the skills of all players to their maximum capability. Our philosophy is to build championship caliber players and competitive softball teams. The league makes the commitment to the players that they will play on a team as long as the player/parent lives up to the rules set forth by the coaches at the beginning of the season (attending practices, proper attitude, hard work ethic, on time for games and practices). Throughout the season, every attempt will be made to develop players in multiple positions (infield and outfield).
Travel softball goals differ from goals at the recreation softball level. Both levels of play focus on the development of players, however, travel softball players will compete at a higher level of play. Because of the competitive nature of the travel softball program and the attempt to win games, all players are not guaranteed an equal amount of playing time in each game. Field positions, playing time, and the distribution of playing time, is decided by the team manager and coaching staff. The team manager and coaching staff has the prerogative to play the players the number of innings they chose as well as in the position(s) best suited for the players and the team in an attempt to sustain a competitive level of play against the opposing team.
